About the Shell Service Environment

The current LCSEE general shell environment is a group of dual-Athlon 1.8 GHz processor based machines running Ubuntu Linux (which you can download for yourself by following the link).

The source code to all of the programs running on these machines is available for you * and the terms of the license say that you are allowed to modify them to suit your needs and distribute those modifications, in fact this is encouraged. ** We invite you to learn why this is important for us and for you by reading a brief essay, "Why Software Should Not Have Owners" by Richard Stallman.

* Simply use the command apt-get source package to download the source code for that package on the shell server.

** Notable exceptions are pine and the the JSDK version 1.4 provided by Java-Linux
